Edinburgh history private guided tour tag 2

4h

Discover the history of Scotland through your taste buds! Did you know that angels drink whisky in Scotland? Do we really eat stuffed sheep's belly (our famous haggis)? How did people bake bread in Edinburgh when no one had ovens? On this guided tasting tour, we'll visit Edinburgh's Old Town together and enjoy its rich culinary heritage. Have a light breakfast, it is going to be an absolute feast!

Tour Highlights:

  • Grassmarket and Old Town: Start your culinary expedition in the heart of Edinburgh's Old Town. Visit the historic Grassmarket, nestled in the shadow of Edinburgh Castle. Once a bustling market where merchants gathered to sell goods and livestock, the Grassmarket has been transformed into a pretty square that is brimming with pubs, stores and restaurants. Sample Scottish snacks as you discover the secrets of the trades that once took place here.

  • Royal Mile and Cullen Skink: Discover the beauty and history of the Royal Mile, the main thoroughfare of Edinburgh's Old Town, featuring St Giles Cathedral, Tron Kirk Market, and picturesque little closes (streets). We'll pass all the city's must-sees and you'll learn their secrets, such as Queen Mary-Stuart's favourite dish, or why the people of Edinburgh were so fond of fish soup. In fact, why just talk about history when you can actually experience it? You can try our Scottish fish soup yourself in a local pub! Pair your soup with a local lager or an Irn Bru, the Scottish soda dating back to 1901.

  • Canongate, Haunted Pubs and Whisky: Discover the rich history of the Canongate burgh before heading to a pub whose foundations date back to 1591. Haunted in the true Scottish tradition, it was once home to a prison and a tax office (take your pick for the most terrifying of the two!). You can learn more about the history of whisky while sampling a dram, yourself, along with two Scottish culinary specialties: haggis, our famous stuffed sheep's belly, and cranachan, our national dessert. Finish your visit by trying your hand at the oh-so-British tradition of a pub quiz!
