We are Hiring freelance tour guides! (Edinburgh) 

Are you a stay-at-home mum/dad looking for flexible work? Are you recently retired and looking for an exciting new project? Are you currently working part time? We are looking for tour guides to join us in showcasing Edinburgh and its history! You will be doing a guided tour in Edinburgh 2 or 3 times a month for families or small groups. 

 

Introduction 

At Scottish Secrets we aim to share the hidden history of Scotland during immersive guided tours.  

We’re not necessarily looking for people with years of guiding experience – first and foremost, we are looking for people who love telling stories and are comfortable with public speaking – and we’ll take care of the rest and make sure you’re properly trained for the historical content. Were you a teacher? Do you have a background in theatre or improv? Are you someone who loves creating adventures for your kids?

Useful skills 

Good at telling stories, love history and local knowledge, Comfortable working with children (DBS check not required as the parent will always be there with their children during the tour) 

 

What will your job look like? 

Pending on your areas of interest, we will train you on some of the following tours:  

• History of Edinburgh guided tour for families 

• Edinburgh Castle 

• Sherlock Holmes 

• Harry Potter 

Each tour lasts between 2 and 3 hours.

Ensuring that you are trained and feel ready for our tours and activities is key for us. Before your first workshop or guided tour, we will provide you with scripts with step-by-step details, and multiple dry runs.

Our company is open 7 days a week between 9am and 6pm with some exceptions on specific requests. However, we don’t have pre-scheduled tour start times. If you tell us “I’m available all Saturday afternoons”, we’ll then open a bookable time slot for you on our website for all Saturday afternoons, and as soon as we receive an enquiry from a client, we’ll book you in. 

 

The profiles we are looking for: 

• Being comfortable with public speaking  

• Being flexible with sharing stories with people from different backgrounds (families, groups of adult friends from around the world) 

• Creativity and ability to create compelling stories 

• You know your agenda and you can give us clearly a list of when you’re available, and update us frequently regarding when you’re not available 

• Knowledge of the area (Scotland and more specifically Edinburgh) 

• Willingness to learn the content of the tour and make it your own 

• Friendly and full of smiles 

• Self-reliance and resourcefulness 

• But most of all, curious to learn and happy to share!

Pay:   

Freelance position – when we confirm a tour with you, you will be paid based on the duration of your tour from £30 per hour. Note that you must have a freelance status, or willingness to set-up as a sole-trader (we can help!).
